Feet up

The first photo is an example of a classic “on the waterfront” vacation shot.

Works well even against any background, even when you are at a tough to reach hiking spot.

The use of the feet give a sense of relaxation and your effectively “enjoying the view.”

In the first shot, the faraway mountain ranges, and the gradient in the water give a sense of depth.

In the second shot, the feet lead the eye to the majestic scenery. The way the grass seems to be as tall as the mountains , also shows up the distance even though the mountains appear to be close by.

Reaching out

Reach out! – works with kids and grown ups. On vacation we have the tendency to reach out and touch anything, from window shopping to foodstalls. Be on the look out and get some fab shots of people reaching out.

Naturally, when we see someone reaching out or pointing we look in that direction. Use this to draw the viewer to the actual backdrop of the photo.

Beach Art

Beach writing/drawing: Anything goes. Enough said!

Bonus tip: Draw out instruments on the sand and pretend your using it, like your laptop. Give your boss a copy of the photo – let him know you were working during vacation too :)

On the Hammock

Hammocking – what you need : Strong hammock, kids or adults (various sizes work best :) )

Sleep shots or lazy vacationers comes close too!

If you don’t have kids to pack your hammock, or are too scared of one, just step back and take an empty shot. No one will know..!!

Watch how the photographer has angled the shot so that the children’s bodies are also visible – and the fact that they “look up” - this gives both depth and perspective to the shot. If the shot was simple a direct snapshot of the faces, it would have been less interesting.

Water Themes

Water shots: Particularly good if your so lazy after your spa massage that you don’t feel like even walking around to take a few good snaps. Just focus on the water and shoot away.

The play of sunlight at different times on the water (particularly the golden shades at sunset) is an interesting subject. If your on vacation to a tropical area, the various hues and colors by the water at the beach can be quite interesting.

Bonus tip: You can do this back at home too: just tell your neighbor the water is from some exotic island from your vacation!
